 【News release: Public Relations Office】

To celebrate 50 years since its establishment, Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages held a special 4-day Asia Pacific Ursuline Education Conference (APUEC) from October 21 to 24, with over 100 guests attending from countries such as the USA, Australia, Thailand, Indonesia, Japan, Cambodia, Vietnam, India, and Taiwan. During the first day of the conference, a special anniversary mass was held which was led by the Archbishop of the Diocese of Kaohsiung Peter Liu Cheng-chung to celebrate the school’s anniversary. This most ceremonious of Roman Catholic holy rituals was held to show the care and sincerest thanks which the people at Wenzao have shown toward the Roman Catholic Church over the last 50 years. A concelebration and a sermon were delivered by diplomatic representative Msgr. Slađan Ćosić from the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) to the Holy See, with Father Zalewski from the Kaohsiung St. Dominic Catholic High School serving as the conference priest. This special moment was able to be witnessed by all of the esteemed guests from Ursuline colleges around the Asia Pacific region.

APUEC was founded in response to the Ursulines of the Roman Union held in Rome in the year 2000. The conference is a large regional assembly which focuses on education issues and challenges faced by Roman Catholic Orders. Since the first gathering in Indonesia in 2006, this event marked the fourth time which this regional conference has taken place. With this year’s event being organized by Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages, the theme of the event was “Praise Be to You (Laudato Si"): On Care for Our Common Home through Ursuline Education.” The conference focused on how Ursuline education can respond to the “Praise Be to You” encyclical issued by Pope Francis through engaging in speeches, ecology field studies, and related discussions. It is also hoped that this conference assisted all Ursuline schools within the Asia Pacific region to develop a network of effective education related to this common topic.

The conference was attended by Prioress General of the Roman Union Ursulines M. Cecilia Wang OSU; Sr. Teresa KU, the president of the Ursulines of the Roman Union, the Province of China; General Council members of the Ursulines of the Roman Union Sr. Neusimar Marques da Silva and Sr. Ann-Marie Gardiner; Ursuline College President Sister Christine De Vinne; Ou Chin-der, a member of Wenzao"s Board of Trustees University; and Sr. Eve Justina Romould, Principal of the Ursuline English Medium School in India. Representatives from the USA, Cambodia, Vietnam, Japan, Australia, India, Thailand, Indonesia, and Taiwan were also present. A total of 90 representatives from 11 Ursuline provinces, 10 countries, and 34 schools were able to share their experiences of implementing Ursuline education at the conference, allowing Ursuline schools around the world to become even closer to God during their work. This was also the first occasion when representatives from Cambodia and Vietnam were invited to attend an Ursuline education conference in the Asia Pacific region.
