【News release: Service Learning Center】

This summer, 83 students from different departments in Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages (Wenzao) were sent to Taipei as the volunteers for the 29th Summer Universiade. They were in charge of different tasks, including: attaché of foreign guests, reception, media and public relations, information, as well as tour guide service. During the 12-day Summer Universiade, Wenzao’s volunteers were praised by the organizers and foreign athletes for their excellent performance.

Wu Rou-yi, a student from Wenzao’s English Department, said that in serving as an attaché, she had to accompany the guests to different venues to watch the games every day during the Summer Universiade. The tasks included arranging transportation, planning the schedules, providing interpretation and communication services, and helping the guests to find the related personnel in charge of the venues. Thanks to this opportunity, she was able to visit different venues and applaud with other audience for the exciting games. In addition, Wu was also a receptionist of the Opening Gala and Farewell Luncheon held by the Department of International Relations of Taipei City Government. She was the volunteer leader of the Reception Group at the Opening Gala, and assisted the Government in promoting Taiwanese culture. According to Wu, participating in the volunteer program helped her not only to understand more about the organization of the Summer Universiade, but also to learn to deal with sudden situations and challenges requiring prompt interpretation.

Chou Yu-chen, a second-year student from Wenzao’s Department of International Affairs, was a receptionist in the Taipei Gymnasium during the Summer Universiade. She spoke different languages to receive guests from different countries every day. Since she could speak Korean, sometimes she was also sent to the venues as a Korean interpreter during the games. She had to assist the Korean athletes and their families in dealing with different issues, and provided interpretation service for the Korean athletes when they were taking their medical examination. According to Chou, after she used what she had learned at school to assist the organizer in conducting the international games, she had broadened her horizons and learned how to better behave around others and solve different problems.

The cooperation between Wenzao and the organizing team of the Taipei Summer Universiade began in April 2016, when the Team came south to the University for the volunteer recruitment and held various presentations jointly with the University’s Office of Student Affairs, Office of International & Cross-strait Cooperation, as well as different departments. For the volunteer service, Wenzao’s Service Learning Center established a Class C volunteer orientation program for the Summer Universiade. The program consisted of different courses, including the instruction regarding “Summer Universiade’s Past & Present and Volunteer Notice” given by Kan Yun-liang, instructor from the Center for Physical Education, as well as the lecture on “Service Attitude and Skills” given by Lucia Yang, Dean of International and Cross-strait Cooperation. Through the orientation program, the volunteer students learned more about the Summer Universiade, and obtained excellent service literacy and professional skills.

During the Summer Universiade, Chen Jin-pei, Dean of Student Affairs, and Huang Te-fan, Director of the Service Learning Center, went to Taipei to visit the volunteer students and cheer them on. In the 2017 Summer Universiade, Wenzao’s volunteer students provided their services at various places, including: Universiade Park, Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center, Taipei Gymnasium, Fu Jen Catholic University’s Track and Field Stadium, and Athletes' Village. Their excellent performance won the praise and appreciation of the organizing supervisors, and their language competence and service enthusiasm received very high opinions as well. Through the volunteer service of the Summer Universiade, Wenzao’s students extended their competence in language and cross cultural communication, showed the Wenzaorian willingness to help others, and implemented the University’s commitment to social accountability.
