Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages cares about its new immigrant and foreign students. Earlier the Center for Southeast Asian Languages Teaching in the College of European and Asian Languages held a Tea Party for New Immigrant / Foreign Students to Meet the President. New immigrant and foreign students were invited to talk with President Shieu-ming Chou, Vice President for International Affairs Samuel C. Y. Ku, and unit heads. At the party, President Chou was particularly concerned about foreign students’ studies at Wenzao, and listened to their advice on University affairs.

Several unit heads attended the tea party to communicate with new immigrant and foreign students face to face. Most students who attended the tea party asked questions about the language used in teaching, courses offered, internship, and dormitory counseling. President Chou answered their questions one by one while suggesting that foreign students should participate more in University clubs to prepare beforehand for their careers.

Currently, there are approximately 300 foreign students and more than 80 new immigrant students studying at Wenzao. Fourteen of these students are studying in the Southeast Asian Languages and Industry Credit Program. The University cares about the life of new immigrant students and those from Southeast Asia, as well as their studies. The suggestions put forth by them will be compiled and used as reference for future University development and the promotion of the New Southbound Policy related to education.

Professor Jorge Tigno from the University of the Philippines Diliman is currently a Chair Professor at Wenzao. He gave advice in particular on the interaction between foreign and Taiwanese students during the tea party. Tigno doesn’t think that language is a barrier, but a medium. If students want to understand each other better, they can make friends with each other using gestures, as well as basic English or Chinese vocabulary. He encouraged those attending the tea party to communicate more with Taiwanese students.

The Contract Lecturer in Indonesian Language at Wenzao, Yufita Ng, pointed out that students from Southeast Asia are serious about their studies. Currently, Wenzao Indonesian Cultural Association and Wenzao Vietnam Cultural Association for foreign students have been established. They welcome students’ active participation, whereby students can gain experience in language learning and intercultural communication. The Vice President for International Affairs Samuel C. Y. Ku thanked the foreign students for their participation in the tea party. He also suggested that the University will take their advice, in order to keep making improvements. He hopes that the students will continue to improve themselves and have a pleasant learning experience during their studies at Wenzao.
