Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages has always placed great importance on environmental protection. To respond to the government’s plastic reduction policy, it encourages its faculty and students to reduce the consumption of single-use tableware. Executives have been encouraged to prepare their own tableware at administrative meetings since early January. As of May 1st, those attending important meetings and activities should prepare their own tableware as well. It is hoped that the plan to reduce waste on campus can be fully implemented, and everyone can do his/her bit to protect the earth. To promote the University’s New Life Movement, the Wenzao Student Union takes the lead in posting a short version of questions about the Movement on Facebook to encourage all students to always be ready to protect the environment. Meanwhile, the Union makes eco-friendly drink bags; these bags will be distributed on School Sports Day (April 13th), in order to encourage students to take action to protect the earth.

To reduce waste and plastic use on campus, the University’s Office of General Affairs convened a meeting with the Secretariat, the Office of Student Affairs, and the College of Liberal Arts Education to discuss how to “implement the plan of reducing waste and plastic use”; the meeting was chaired by the Vice President for Administrative Affairs. It is hoped that the amount of waste and plastic will be reduced in the future. The total amount of waste in 2017 was 118.3 tons, which was 6.8 tons less than the waste in 2016 (i.e. 125.1 tons). The goal is to reduce the total amount of waste to 100 tons in the future, in order to reduce burden on our planet.

Recently, Wenzao began to promote its New Life Movement on campus, encouraging its faculty and students not to bring handmade drinks, plastic-bottled drinks, disposable chopsticks, and plastic bags to the University. It also urges them not to buy plastic-bottled drinks. With the New Life Movement, it hopes to raise their awareness on environmental sustainability, and implement the plan to reduce waste at the source, starting with the faculty. They are asked to change their habit of throwing plastic products away after a single use. In so doing, a new campus culture can be formed, and a consensus on building a low carbon campus can be forged, whereby they can fulfill their responsibilities as citizens of the earth.

The implementation of the plan to reduce plastic use starts with the administrative and academic executives of Wenzao. They have been preparing their own tableware when attending important/large meetings since January 2018, including administrative and executive meetings. Single-use boxed lunches are no longer available; they are replaced by food sharing, in order to create a low carbon diet. In addition to not producing lunchbox waste, a low carbon diet can also help to reduce the amount of kitchen waste and avoid wasting food. The University would like to remind every unit to inform their partner companies or food vendors that bringing single-use tableware, plastic cups, plastic-bottled drinks, and plastic bags to the University when holding activities or carrying out a plan is prohibited.

Leader of the Wenzao Student Union, Yu-Tung Ko, says that she and the Head of the Department of Student Rights of the Union, Ta-Yu Lin, actively contacted the University to understand its approach and identify with its philosophy and core value of waste and plastic reduction after the New Life Movement was announced. Therefore, they have compiled all the questions that students might have and posted a short version of these questions and answers on Facebook to help promote the Movement. Ko stresses that we only have one earth. “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” She hopes that the faculty and students agree with the philosophy of “protecting the environment and loving the earth.” The Union’s Facebook posts have been warmly welcomed by students. Moreover, it has launched the product: eco-friendly drink bags; by encouraging students to reduce the consumption of plastic bags, demonstrating that it practices what it preaches. Said bags will be distributed to members of the Union, who have paid the membership fees, on Sports Day (April 13).

The Environmental Protection Administration under the Executive Yuan has been promoting measures for reducing the use of plastic shopping bags since 2002. It hopes to reduce waste at the source and helps the public to develop the habit of bringing their own shopping bags when they go shopping. It has been expanding its control targets since January 1, 2018, reiterating its policy on reducing the use of plastic bags. Not only do we need to protect our marine ecosystems, but we also have to maintain our environmental sustainability. As a member of the Green University Union of Taiwan, and having signed the Talloires Declaration, Wenzao has been engaged in the promotion of a green campus and environmental sustainability. To protect the earth, so as to contribute to the sustainable development of our environment, we call on the faculty and students to put the idea of reducing waste at the source into action, starting with themselves. They are asked to cooperate with the University’s New Life Movement, which requires that they change their habit of throwing plastic products away after a single use. In so doing, they will take on more responsibility in the sustainable development of the environment, and help to build a low carbon campus.
