Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages established Angela Food Bank (AFB) this year, not only to provide food sharing services, but also to display Ursuline cultural relics and sell household items as well as goods from social welfare organizations for charity. By so doing, the food bank wants to promote ideas that can bring light to society and Wenzao as well, such as: share more as you can instead of donations; be more generous to others instead of being self-satisfied; cherish what you have instead of buying new goods. It has since benefited lots of students, while many faculty and staff members share their items on their own initiative. The faculty and students run the bank in shifts and together, making it a gateway of love and sharing.

AFB was prepared this June and started to run in September. This sharing platform was provided to solve problems, such as resources-wasting, individual alienation, the gaps between the haves and have-nots, and even spiritual emptiness. By this platform, Wenzao can serve people with environmental conservation, sharing and caring. The faculty and students run the bank in the hope that they can help others to have the concepts of environmental conservation and sharing, and also encourage more students to be a blessing for others with good influence in the future.

Since AFB was set up, lots of faculty members have joined it to share what they have: food and items, time or creativity, and actively provide volunteer services. The bank attracted many students to visit and later become frequent visitors; they can take a break, eat food, or use items here, while others actively care for, and listen to, them. It is a place where both the faculty and students can share their feelings and renew their strength.

The bank is managed by the Evangelization & Pastoral Section of the Center of Ursuline Education. At present, there is no fixed source of funding. It operates in a mode of sharing, cooperation and self-sufficiency. Relying on mutual consideration, love and sharing of the faculty and students, AFB has become a channel for sharing on campus.

In terms of material supply, AFB also collaborates with the Burning Fire charity organization. The organization provides AFB with their experiences of running a food bank on an irregular basis, while supplying plenty of items to AFB, such as toothbrushes and toothpaste, socks, sanitary pads, fruits and plastic chairs. Wenzao’s faculty and students also constantly supply items to AFB, so AFB can also share items with others via its collaboration with Burning Fire, in order to help more people in need in society. Moreover, AFB also cooperates with the Ark Employment Service Association and the Psychiatric Rehabilitation Service Association to provide small-scale workshops with a platform for selling their products, helping the mentally challenged rebuild their lives and obtain an opportunity for employment training.

The freshman of the Applied Chinese Department, Lee Wen-Xu works two hours per week at the bank. He said that it is a warm place with music and food. He is very honored to help others, and realizes what “helping others: the spring of happiness” means. His classmates come to the bank to keep him company and serve together.

Since its establishment, AFB has consecutively held activities like charity sales for handmade sock plushies and Christmas cards. Volunteers can relieve their stress via handmade activities, while donating sales revenue to other charity organizations or spending it on AFB. The Counseling Center of Wenzao provides art growth groups with the opportunity to create artworks and sell them on an irregular basis. In the future, AFB plans to hold a Christmas stable design competition to improve the Christmas atmosphere on campus. The open hours of AFB are 8:00-17:00 from Monday to Friday. It is located in front of Angela Piazza. Everyone is welcome to visit it or take a break here.
