In response to the global demand for learning the Chinese language, Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages' highly reputable Chinese language teaching program has earned the recognition of prominent higher education institutions (HEIs) in the United States (US). Top representatives of well-known institutions from the US have visited Wenzao recently and have formed an alliance to jointly promote a number of cooperation and exchange programs.

On March 28, Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages' President Mei-Hua Chen welcomed the delegates from the University of St. Thomas (UST) Houston led by its President, Dr. Richard Ludwick, accompanied by Vice President Dr. Christopher P. Evans, Acting Dean of the Humanities and Sciences, Dr. Hans Jakob Stockton, Director Lai Xianlie, former Director Dr. Wang Dunzheng, and officials from the Ministry of Education. The purpose of this visit was to renew the partnership agreement and to discuss new paths for academic collaboration, in addition to the existing student and faculty exchange programs.

Wenzao and UST Houston first signed the partnership agreement in 2010, and from that time on, the two sister schools have established a fruitful partnership, which strengthened as time went by. The exchanges between teachers and students of the two schools are quite frequent, and these have paved the way for deeper friendships to flourish. And now with the renewal of the partnership agreement, the two schools are looking forward to engaging in collaborative research, hold joint academic conferences and seminars, joint publications and sharing of academic knowledge and information. UST Houston delegates were inspired to tap on Wenzao’s strengths in filling in an upcoming niche in their academic program: providing opportunities for Wenzao students and faculty to provide Mandarin Chinese language instruction under an internship placement and faculty exchange program. In return, Wenzao can expect UST Houston faculty to serve for a semester or two depending on the academic needs of Wenzao.

In a related event, another group of Education Directors from the US led by the Taiwan Academic Exchange Foundation visited Wenzao on March 19. The US delegates were top representatives from the University of California- Davis, San Francisco State University, and University of Texas- Austin, among others; 8 HEIs in total were present. Wenzao’s VP Chong-Wei Lin and other department chairs and representatives initiated an open discussion with three American students pursuing undergraduate studies in Wenzao- sharing their experiences and reasons for choosing Wenzao over other Taiwan universities. A first-hand account of American students’ learning experiences was an eye-opener, which helped the US delegates understand more about the kind of quality education and learning environment Wenzao provides to their students. They had a good overall impression of the school and they have expressed their willingness to engage with Wenzao for future cooperation.

Wenzao University has continued to deepen the academic relationship between Taiwan and the United States. From May to June this year, there will be a team from a long-time sister school, Fort Hays State University, to come to Wenzao to discuss bilingual teacher cooperation. The president of Buena Vista University (BVU) in the United States will also personally lead BVU team to visit Wenzao. In late May, Wenzao to be led by Dr. Chiu-hui Wu, Dean of OICC and the Director of the International Affairs Department, Yu-Jane Chen, will attend the annual NAFSA meeting organized by the Taiwan Ministry of Higher Education Exchange Foundation to explore more cooperation and linkages opportunities with universities in the United States.
