     To promote academic communication with partner universities, Wenzao’s president, Dr. Ching-Hwa Tsai led his delegation to attend the 20th ACUCA Biennial Conference, U6-forum and the 11th Cross-strait Conference on Foreign Language Teaching and Learning. 

The ACUCA Biennial Conference Explored Spiritual Education in Higher Education
     The theme of 2014 ACUCA Conference is “Values Education: A Vital Constituent for Successful Education in the 21st Century” and was held in Fu-Jen Catholic University. Nearly a hundred of scholars from Britain, the United States, Japan, Korea, Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Taiwan, and Hong Kong attended this year’s conference on Oct. 24-26. President Tsai led his delegation, including administrators and teachers, participated in this conference. 

     The Conference began with the keynote speech, delivered by Prof. Michael J. Garanzini, S.J., the President of Loyola University, Chicago, titled “Listening to Today’s Youth: Challenges and Opportunities for the Future of a Christian University.” President Garanzini pointed out that the youth today are encouraged to integrate their knowledge, move beyond ethnocentrism, and develop a world vision and understanding of human needs. Therefore, education should aim to prepare students to explore their potential and understand their needs.    

     President Garanzini also mentioned that schools should cultivate the youth’s talents through education. Schools should allow students to develop their problem-solving skills; when facing a problem, solutions may appear from multiple disciplines and perspectives. Finally, President Garanzini concluded that education should empower the youth to integrate their knowledge, listen to others and express oneself.  

     This year’s meeting focused on three aspects, including Moral Education, Character Education and Spiritual Education. Dr. Yao-Tung Lin, the Vice Dean of Academic Affairs, was invited to lead the session of Spiritual Education. The 2016 ACUCA will be held by Parahyangan Catholic University, Indonesia.



Strategic Alliance Signed between Wenzao and LTU in U6 Forum
     The annual U6 Forum conference was held by Ling Tung University. President Ching-Hwa Tsai led his delegation to attend this conference on Oct. 26-27. This year’s conference theme was “An New Era for Higher Education.” Delegations from University of St. Thomas in Chile, University of St. Thomas in Houston, Anhui University, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages, and the host Ling Tung University participated in this event.  

     During the meeting, a strategic alliance was signed by President Tsai and the President of Ling Tung University, Dr. Chih-yang Chao, to express their partnerships towards collaborations in areas of student and faculty visits, academic conferences, and teaching effectiveness. 

     The U6 forum was initiated by Ling Tung University in 2006, aiming to provide an academic platform for member universities to learn from one another and explore various issues among partner universities. Every October, each member university takes turn to host this annual event and this year goes to Ling Tung University. The current six member universities include Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages, Ling Tung University, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, Anhui University, University of St. Thomas in Chile, and University of St. Thomas in Houston. The 2015 U6 Forum will be hosted by Anhui University and Wenzao will be hosting the 2016 forum.


Cross-strait Conference on FLTL: A Platform for Foreign Language Education
     To expand the cross-strait partnership, the Vice President of Academic Affairs of Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages led his delegation to attend the Cross-strait Conference on Foreign Language Teaching and Learning, including administrators and teachers of Departments of English, French, German, Spanish and Japanese. In addition to Wenzao’s delegation, attendees included the delegation of Shanghai International Studies University, Beijing Foreign Studies University and the host Fu-Jen University. 

     Professor Chen, the Vice-President for Academic Affairs, gave a keynote speech on the development of dual foreign language programs of Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages. During the meeting, the four universities discussed about the future organization for the Conference.  

     Represented the voice of Wenzao, Dr. Yi-Jou Lo, The manager of Office of Research and Development, suggested cross-strait and cross-discipline research studies are encouraged for future collaboration and proposed possible research topics that sparked discussions among scholars. 

     Considering the rapid and fast-changing nature of foreign language education, Wenzao initiated to hold the Cross-strait Conference on Foreign Language Teaching and Learning which was supported by Shanghai International Studies University, Beijing Foreign Studies University and Fu-Jen University. The conference started in 2004 and was taken turn by each member university hereafter. The 2015 conference will be hosted by Beijing Foreign Studies University and Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages will host the 2016 conference.
