Zhejiang Yuexiu University of Foreign Languages and Guangdong University of Foreign Studies are partner schools of Wenzao and they paid a visit to our School, respectively. Beyond sharing the experience concerning school affairs development, interactive discussions were held to understand the latest academic directions between the two sides of the Strait. In addition, the School President of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, Zhong Wei-he, gave a speech with regard to the Interpreting Art and Adaptive Strategy to share his practical experience.
The Vice President for Academic Affairs, Chen Kuo-tai, Ph.D. and several senior supervisors participated in the ceremony welcoming Zhejiang Yuexiu University of Foreign Languages. He pointed out that this year is the first annual gathering after signing the contract last year. Currently, there are on-going mutual exchange programs among teachers and students, and he anticipated that more collaboration can ensue in the near future. The Deputy School President of Zhejiang Yuexiu University of Foreign Languages, Ye Fang-chun expressed that by focusing on advancing students’ language proficiency and specialty, the school might be upgraded within ten years. Wenzao also shared its experience of being upgraded.
The interactive activities were held by the Office of International and Cross-strait Cooperation; before the discussions, visitors toured the campus; in particular, they had an excellent impression of the Language Diagnostic and Consulting Center. The advisor of Zhejiang Yuexiu University of Foreign Languages, Zhang Ping-yi stated that, based on the concept of the ‘whole person’, the model of school management applied in Wenzao is worth learning. Jian Cheng-yao, a teacher in the Dept. of English is presently in the School due to the exchange program; she shared her one month living experience with all participants and said that the class instruction is all in English, and even the learning materials are the original texts. There are plenty of extra curriculum activities and the tradition of graduation performance is the most interesting part.
Furthermore, in the speech of Interpreting Art and Adaptive Strategy given by the School President of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, Zhong Wei-he, he shared his personal experience of interpreting, and emphasized the six work principles for interpreters; he mentioned that the Note Taking skills, i.e. the indentation method (from upper left to bottom right) not only can record the most keywords, but also jot down the cause and effect to help achieve memorization. He proposed that students who are interested in interpreting should choose the appropriate tools, such as ballpoint pen and notebook that is open from bottom to up instead of from right to left. Zhong Wei-he is a famous scholar familiar with interpreting. All participants reaped significant benefits from his speech.
The purpose of their visit is to deepen the achievement of the U-6 Forum which was held initially by Ling Tung University in 2006; it mainly provides interactive opportunities to scholars so that they can explore various academic issues. It is often held in October and all members take turns to be the sponsor. The sponsor this year is Ling Tung University; there are six members, including: Ling Tung University, Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, Anhui University, La Universidad Santo Tomás, Chile and University of St. Thomas, Houston.
