 【News release: Public Relations Office】

In an effort to help minority women, Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages approved the establishment of Wenzao Golden-Z Club and held the club’s founding convention on June 8. Former Director Ming-zhu Lu, sitting Director Li-yang Lai, International Commissioner Li-chu Wu, and Committee Chairperson for Scholarship Min-li Lee of Zonta International Kaohsiung Club, as well as Academic Vice President Mei-hua Chen, Director of the Public Relations Office Cris Chen, Assistant Professor Jun-fang Liao (instructor of Wenzao Golden-Z Club) of the Department of International Business Administration, and several teachers of Wenzao attended the convention.

Director Lai is a dedicated member of Zonta and an outstanding alumna of the 11th Graduation English Dept., who was selected in 1999. In her remarks, she recognized Wenzao students’ advantage in speaking foreign languages. With the establishment of the Club in her alma mater, she expected that the students would make Zonta clubs in Taiwan visible in the international community and let the world hear Taiwan’s voice. She also shared her experience in Zonta with the younger schoolmates in the convention.

Former Director Lu said that in addition to fighting for women’s rights, Zonta encourages young females in senior high schools and universities to join the Club, where they will develop the ability to work in a team and explore their own potential during the process. International Commissioner Wu expressed that Zonta clubs across the globe are dedicated to protecting women’s rights and improving their status by focusing on providing meaningful service and empowering women around the world. She hoped that the establishment of the Wenzao Golden-Z Club would make Zonta stronger.

Zonta has been organizing many events to encourage women to stand up against violence. Academic Vice President Chen said that the Order of St. Ursula, which founded Wenzao, has been cultivating female leaders, and it shows that Wenzao’s founding philosophy is consistent with that of Zonta.

Wenzao Golden-Z Club was founded by Assistant Professor Liao, who called on a group of enthusiastic students to join. Founding Leader Zheng-wei Kao (studying at the second grade of the Department of International Business Administration) expressed that since he was little, he had noticed the unfair treatments faced by women at home and in society. Desiring to fight for equal rights for women, he volunteered to serve as the leader of the club to raise awareness of women’s issues as the first male leader. In light of the increasing number of new female immigrants in Taiwan, he would encourage Wenzao students to use their foreign language ability to help these females learn Chinese to assimilate into Taiwan society. He also encouraged other Wenzao students who are enthusiastic and care about women’s issues to joint Wenzao Golden-Z Club.

Zonta International was founded in 1919 by nine founding clubs in the city of Buffalo in New York State, the United States. As an NGO member of the United Nations, it is a group of global social service organizations formed by females of all trades and professions. Its headquarters are in the USA, and it has more than 31,000 members in over 1,200 clubs in 67 countries. Zonta clubs provide solutions to help abused women, offer scholarships through their foundations to help women learn, support projects favorable to the health, safety, and economic and political status of women, and encourage loyalty and friendliness among members.
