The opening ceremony of the ninth Wenzao Chinese Summer School was held in the morning on July 4th. Sister school teachers and students from Spain, France, the UK, Korea, Indonesia, and Vietnam came to Taiwan to learn the Chinese language and experience Taiwanese culture.
The Chinese Summer Camp was hosted by the Office of International and Cross-Strait Cooperation in Wenzao, and nearly 40 teachers and students from nine sister schools participated. The three-week activities included not only professional Chinese language training, but also cultural courses, taking international students to experience Tai Chi, Beijing opera facial painting, seal carving, paper cutting, Chinese fan drawing, Chinese dumpling making, etc. Additionally, instructors were appointed to keep track of students’ learning condition as well as to provide oral training and other necessary assistance.
At the opening ceremony, LuciaJin-Yun Yang, Dean of the Office of International & Cross-strait Cooperation, welcomed the students, who came from far-off countries, in three foreign languages. She expected that this camp could bring students unforgettable memories, and that they could fully experience Chinese culture. One of the students, Wu Chang Ming-Shu (VõTrương Minh Thư), is a junior in the department of medicine in Ho Chi Minh City University of Education. Before coming to Taiwan, she had already learned Chinese for two years in Vietnam. She said that she wished to study Chinese medicine in the future; this is why she came to Taiwan to improve her Chinese language proficiency. This is the first time she came to Taiwan, and she said she liked Taiwan and Wenzao"s learning environment because the campus was exquisite and full of greenery.
A Spanish student named Silvia learned more about Taiwan from interesting videos on the Internet, and the reason why she took part in this Summer School is that she likes Chinese popular songs. Silvia said that the weather in Taiwan was as hot as that in Spain. Except for the time zone difference, she felt happy with everything in Taiwan, which always came as a surprise to her.
The international youths joining in the Summer School this year are from Wenzao"s overseas sister schools, including the University of Castilla-La Mancha in Spain, Aix-Marseille University in France, Loughborough University in Britain, Hannam University in Korea, Petra Christian University in Indonesia, Widya Mandala Catholic University in Surabaya in Indonesia, Ho Chi Minh City University of Education in Vietnam, etc. During the program, Wenzao"s dormitory was made available to all the students, who also joined the tours to well-known attractions, such as Kenting, Taiwan Indigenous Peoples Cultural Park, Meinong in Kaohsiung City, and FoGuang Shan Monastery. On the last day of this Summer School, they gave a cultural performance to show what they had learned in Taiwan.
