 【President"s Office】

Catholic Diocese of Kaohsiung, Archbishop Peter Liu Cheng-Chung , President Wang of the Ursuline Order of the Roman Federation, Association Secretary Sr.Armida Veglio, Association Consular Sr. Ann-Marie Gardiner and Sr. Neusimar Marques da Silva, Chair person of Board of Trustees Sr. Teresa Ku, OSU, Ursuline Sisters,  members of the Board of Trustees, Presidents Lee and Lin, tvisitors from both at home and abroad, colleagues and students. Welcome to the opening ceremony of Wenzao’s 50th Anniversary. Thank you all for coming to celebrate with us.

In 1966, Wenzao Ursuline education was founded in Taiwan. Therefore our 50th Anniversary is truly a significant celebration.  Since, its foundation Wenzao has grown and developed. Today it is a thriving school and well-renowned throughout Taiwan’s education system. Thank you all for joining our community in celebrating this momentous occasion. Its 50 years of development comes from humble beginnings, to today’s continually evolving success. This is a momentous time for the school’s history and reminds us of all the things we are to be grateful for.

I would first like start by reviewing the history of Wenzao Ursuline University. Its successful establishment has been due to the hard work and dedication of Wenzao’s first Chairman Bishop Joseph Cheng and President Wang Fuzhou. This successful foundation can also be attributed to founding pioneers such as Sr. Fidelis Wang, OSU who was Wenzao’s 2nd and 4th President, 3rd President Sr. Angela Chen, 5th President Dr. Ting Fu Ning . This initial period of foundation and rapid development of world class educational programs lasted for 13 years. Wenzao’s first buildings included Zhengqi Hall, Zhuangjing Hall, Gong jian Hall, Mingyuan, the Administration Building, Auditorium and Chapel in Praise of Jesus. In 1999, Professor Bin Bao became the sixth President and led the transformation of Wenzao Ursuline Academy into a college. With this, she became the first President of Wenzao Ursuline College of languages. In 2000, Dr. Bosco Wenruey Lee took over to serve three terms as the 7th, 8th and 9th President. His unwavering ambition and hard work increased the programs that the college would offer. This led to an increasing need for more space and therefore the Interdepartmental Teaching Building was constructed. The integration of departments received an award of recognition from the Ministry of education for its excellence in promoting university programs. Dr. Francis K.H. So  became Wenzao’s 10th President in 2009.  In September 2010, the campus was seriously damaged by Typhoon Fanapi, which cost almost a billion NT in damages. President S o tirelessly led the faculty and students in campus restoration. In August 2013, it became Wenzao Ursuline University of foreign languages, which was comprised of four colleges. Also during the same month Dr. Lucia S. Lin took over as the 11th President and first Chancellor of the University of Foreign Languages, but was then promoted to Minister of Education. Dr. Ching Hwa Tsai then became acting President and later assumed the role as Wenzao’s Vice President, however, in May of this year, he too was promoted to Deputy Minister of Education. Wenzao Ursuline University has been so blessed to have had both a President and Vice-President promoted to serve the central government.

In February 2015, I was appointed as Wenzao’s 12th President. It is such an honor to work for an institution of such great significance. I hope to continue the work of my predecessors and vow to continue developing our esteemed educational programs, while serving as a positive role model for my colleagues and students. In 2015, the Ministry of Education carried out its routine evaluation. All of the university’s departments received outstanding feedback. This earned the school even greater recognition. One journal ran a survey of colleges in the region entitled, "2016 Best Colleges Guide". Wenzao came first in the country for language and communication. It was also ranked between 31-40 for Taiwan’s 2016 best colleges and Taiwan’s best private vocational school. This has been a great honor for our university and brings even greater excitement to our 50th Anniversary celebrations. Indeed, it has been the greatest gift a university could hope for and truly evidences the remarkable work our founding fathers and pioneers have put in. We appreciate all their work, as we continue to strive in carrying out their vision.

Another group of people who have made great contributions are the infinite talents of our school’s faculty and staff. Wenzao Convent’s nuns have been instrumental in its development, including, Late Sr. Marie de Lourdes, OSU,  Sr. Augustin Zing, OSU,  Sr. Ellen Mary Mylod, Sr. Teresa Lin, OSU, Sr. Angela Chen and Sr. Christine Liu, OSU, to name a few. They have served as great educators and spiritual counselors. We also have several senior staff members, who have devoted their whole careers to Wenzao, such as teachers, Huang Yu-Nien, Liao Nan-Yen, Chen Xiao Yun, Wang Xiang, Sr. Hsu Huaying, OSU, Shen Su Mei, Huo Jian Tai, Wu Yin Liu, Wang You Hua and Professor Ting.

We can also never forget other partners that have contributed a tremendous amount, including wives, Ms. Chang, Ms. Ting, Ms. Ji, and Ms. Liu Huang etc. Whether they are retired or still working, they have made great contributions and therefore I wanted to make sure I paid a tribute of appreciation for everything that they have done.

The alumni have also contributed a great deal and are an unparalleled group of guardian angels. Over the past 50 years, there have been more than thirty-three thousand alumni. The Alumni Association has now been in operation for 46 years, with members that live around the world. Currently our Alumni Association has 36 branches in countries throughout Europe, the Americas, Oceania and Asia. In order to show our great appreciation for all their hard work, we have planned some special events for them. They have been very instrumental in so many ways, such as fundraising, providing internships, teaching and increasing Wenzao’s international prestige and visibility. Two of our greatest contributors have been alumni from the class of 1971, Teacher Jiao Lan Xing  and Mother Superior Cecilia Wang OSU.  In 2007, Mother Superior became President of the Ursuline Roman Federation, making her the federation’s first non-European President. She has not only made great contributions to our university and the Alumni Association, she has tirelessly served the federation now for nine years. This year she will also take on the responsibility of revitalizing the Alumni Association.  Our Alumni Association is outstanding and is probably one of the most prestigious in Taiwan.

Finally, on behalf of the school, I would like to thank all of the experts, academics and sister school representatives that have taken the time to participate during this glorious time. This event has given rise to the opportunity to get a deeper understanding of our mission and unique character. We must always remember that the emphasis should remain on education that cultivates the individual and not only on rankings that are bestowed on us. We must not only focus on hardware and expertise, but also on maintaining our high-level humanistic values and liberal arts. We cannot quantify everything and we must always remember that Wenzao’s education is about people and a focus on the work God intends for us to carry out. We cannot forget that education has so many facets, such as philosophy, conscientiousness and devotion. We must continue to focus on Wenzao, its individuality-based system of education, a continual willingness to serve, increasing its internationalism and to spread God’s love. Over the next 50 years, Wenzao will continue to be based in Taiwan, while striving to develop its international visibility.

Thanks again, to all the guests that have come to join us in making our 50th Anniversary a great success. As we look towards the future, we are full of anticipation and optimism. We believe Wenzao will continue to develop and modernize, as it embarks on its second half-century. I would also like to wish you all excellent health, safety, prosperity and happiness. God bless you and thank you for your attention!
